Local Authorities/Grids for Learning

Some local authorities run Securus as a managed service for their schools.
This reduces costs and improves pupil safety and behaviour.

Raise standards

Monitoring a number of schools or networks together, Securus helps you to:

  • Raise e-safety standards
  • Limit liability
  • Meet Every Child Matters requirements
  • Adopt Becta best practice
  • Boost classroom behaviour and attendance
  • Curb cyberbullying (of pupils or staff)

Benefits of hosting a LA managed service across your region include:

  • Protecting schools that lack technical support
  • Reducing hardware and licensing costs
  • Safety for every school, teacher and pupil

Local Authorities/GfL

With different circumstances in each authority and GfL, we help you build a monitoring infrastructure that is customised to your local needs and budgets.

A service managed by a LA or GfL can cover primary schools, secondary schools or both. The authority chooses whether to host the server, manage the violations or give some responsibility to the schools.

Examples

The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames will begin a roll-out of Securus from April 2008 as part of a wider e-safety initiative. Following a successful pilot, the local authority is providing e-safety monitoring for every school in the borough, including nine secondary schools and 38 primary schools.

Secondary schools will own, host and manage their own servers. All primary schools will be covered by a centrally hosted server managed by the local authority.

Kingston case study (pdf)

Norfolk County Council manages Securus for its primary schools, since smaller schools often lack the network or staff needed to host Securus themselves. Violations are checked by the council who notify school staff whenever action is required.

In addition, the council has installed Securus in 20 secondary schools, with each school hosting its own server and managing its violations locally.

Children's Services

Securus is used by Children's Services departments to protect children who are particularly vulnerable.

Example

Surrey County Council protects young people in its children's homes. While Securus hosts the server, it is Children's Services that monitors and manages any violations.

Securus also runs a managed service for traveller children in 21 local authorities. As well as hosting the server, our qualified staff monitor the violations as well. Laptops used by the children automatically download any violations when reconnected to the internet.

Other initiatives

Securus supports educational initiatives, such as:

  • Virtual Learning Environments (VLE)
  • Managed Learning Environments (MLE)
  • Learning Platforms
  • Building Schools for the Future (BSF)
