The mental health & wellbeing of school staff: A ‘crisis’ forcing teachers out of schools

School Staff Wellbeing

Staff wellbeing in schools is often reactive and inconsistent. Teachers feel overwhelmed. Leaders carry growing pressure. Absence rises and budgets feel the strain.

Education Support, The UK’s leading charity dedicated to the mental health and wellbeing of teachers and education staff, has released its latest Teacher Wellbeing Index.

The findings from June and July 2025 have suggested:

  • 76% of education staff who responded reported feeling stressed
  • 77% said they had experienced symptoms of poor mental health due to their work
  • One third (36%) are at risk of probable clinical depression
  • 86% of senior leaders said they felt stressed, with many reporting signs of burnout and exhaustion
  • 81% of senior leaders feel they have too many things to do without enough time to do them in their job

This highlights that there is growing demand for teachers to fill gaps in social, emotional and practical support for young people and a warning that “young people’s education will suffer” if more is not done to keep teachers in their jobs.

Monitoring technology helps tackle mental health & wellbeing concerns on a digital safety level and Securus offers a solution that detects and captures incidents across the school network for both students and staff, with a key library that focuses on mental health and wellbeing.

Captured incidents will flag a potential safeguarding risk which means school staff are also safeguarded, thus offering a whole-school approach to digital safety in education!
